Our History

In the 1970s and early 1980s a group of Turkish men met each morning at the Anstey Railway Station to make their way to the Ford Factory in Broadmeadows. Many of these recently arrived men shared not only a language but also a place of birth, Ordu province on Turkey’s Blacksea coast. As many had arrived in Australia without their families, they also shared their leisure time and sporting activities. When joined by their families, they came together for family focussed social and sporting activities. The Anstey Turkish Social Club was thus formed becoming the Moreland Turkish Association in 1985. Since then the Association has participated actively in both the lives of the Turkish community, and the broader community in the Moreland area. Its aim is to provide information about Turkish culture and Turkish history and promote friendship and understanding between Australia and Turkey.
